ARTIST BIO

Lauren McKinney is an abstract painter fighting Retinitis Pigmentosa. In 2019 during the beginning of the pandemic Lauren was afforded time to be still and focus on family and passions, it was then when she noticed her natural inclination and abilities around painting could be something more than fun. Although she is visually impaired she will continue to express herself and create beautiful works. In 2021 she had works featured in Chela Mitchell pop up group exhibit and the No Kings Collective, Umbrella group exhibit. Also, in early 2020 a collaborative work of hers was featured on the cover of the Washington City Paper then later traveled to Plain Sight (a street-view gallery) which led to an article about the piece and her co creator in the District Fray Magazine.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am a visual artist who enjoys storytelling through photos and painted imagery.  Having discovered my passion for the arts early on but it wasn’t until my late twenties that I knew it was painting and photography that moved me viscerally and became my most effective means of communication.

Mainly done in the abstract/ abstract expressionism form, my works are composed with a strong focus on how color schemes relate to different cultures and evoke emotions. My creations are bold stories and strokes accompanied by beautifully curated colorful backgrounds to make sure it is as beautiful as it is thought provoking.

I rely heavily on color theory, abiding by the rules or challenging them for a desired outcome of emotional release or attachment to the work. My process is always centered around a carefully curated color pallet; neutrals to create a calming environment, pops of color to suggest excitement and community, or text and abstract imagery are featured in pieces that can be used for manifestation and affirmation. Creating to free myself and others, to connect cultures by bringing forth how we are all interconnected through shared experiences and responses no matter what end of the spectrum you happen to fall on.
